Project Overview

This project focuses on creating a portfolio bag for designers using discarded fabric (chindi kapda). The aim was to design a bag that is both functional and expressive, capable of carrying A3 sheets, tools, and personal items while showcasing the aesthetic potential of textile waste.

Concept

The concept explores “waste as resource.”
Instead of uniform fabric, mixed materials were intentionally combined to create a patchwork surface that reflects diversity, reuse, and individuality.

The bag acts as:

  • a utility object (portfolio carrier)

  • a visual statement (sustainability + craft)

Material

Chindi (textile waste)

  • Upholstery fabrics

  • Denim and cotton blends

  • Printed and textured materials

Materials were selected based on:

  • durability

  • thickness

  • visual contrast

Process

Collection of textile scraps

  1. Sorting by color and texture

  2. Cutting into modular pieces

  3. Arranging patch layout

  4. Stitching into panels

  5. Adding inner lining for strength

  6. Constructing bag with straps and closure

A tailor assisted in final stitching for better finish and durability.

Sustainability
  • Reuses textile waste (chindi kapda)

  • Minimizes material wastage

  • Encourages circular design thinking

  • Promotes handmade and local production
